چکیده

This paper explores event-based feedback schemes for controlling spike timing in phase models of neurons with the constraint of a chargebalanced stimulus over a period of stimulation. We present an energy-optimal control system based on variational methods. We also present a biologicallyinspired quasi-impulsive control system that, mimicking the signaling behavior of real neurons, can achieve reference phase tracking. Applied to a pacemakerdriven ensemble, this control can achieve desynchronization using a set of charge-balanced stimuli.

Charge-Balanced Minimum-Power Controls for Spiking Neuron Oscillators

In this paper, we study the optimal control of phase models for spiking neuron oscillators. We focus on the design of minimum-power current stimuli that elicit spikes in neurons at desired times. We furthermore take the charge-balanced constraint into account because in practice undesirable side effects may occur due to the accumulation of electric charge resulting from external stimuli. Charge...

Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity in Balanced Random Networks

The balanced random network model attracts considerable interest because it explains the irregular spiking activity at low rates and large membrane potential fluctuations exhibited by cortical neurons in vivo. In this article, we investigate to what extent this model is also compatible with the experimentally observed phenomenon of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). Confronted with the p...

Spike timing dependent plasticity: mechanisms, significance, and controversies

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. This idea was purposed by Hebb to provide a basis for the formation of a cell assembly. Repetitive correlated activity of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons can induce long-lasting synaptic strength modification, the direction and extent of whi...

Time optimal control of spiking neurons.

By injecting an electrical current control stimulus into a neuron, one can change its inter-spike intervals. In this paper, we investigate the time optimal control problem for periodically firing neurons, represented by different one-dimensional phase models, and find analytical expressions for the minimum and maximum values of inter-spike intervals achievable with small bounded control stimuli...
